The Nordhavn 47, "The Winnebago of the Water"

It's built to take on just about anything
It's built to take on just about anything

The Nordhavn 47 may look like a cross between a fishing trawler and motor cruiser but this boat is the true Winnebago on the water allowing worldwide worry free cruising.
It might look like a fishing trawler crossed with a motor cruiser but this is a real live aboard ocean going vessel. At first glance most people can’t imagine that this is the company’s newest model.

Why would a company build a boat that looks like a part fishing trawler / part cruiser? Even more puzzling, what sort of customers would like this sort of boat? Finding answers to these questions was going to be one of my biggest challenges in my test of the Nordhavn 47. After meeting the European team from Nordavn, we get into the Hamble in the late afternoon on a cold January. There was not just one but two 47s in two different versions of decoration, so I could compare the “naked“ version with the one ocean going equipment. Our test model as often happens belongs to someone so we have to respect that.

After a quick glance round I quickly assumed that after boating, the owner’s second passion is television, because there seems to be TV sets are installed in every room, staring from a huge LCD screen in a port side lounge to smaller sets in the rest of the rooms. Fortunately I didn’t notice one in the heads though.

On the water

We went to into the sea at about 9am in the morning next day. Our time was limited by tides and we had to return before the low level of water makes us impossible to put ashore. Harbour maneuvering on a single engine might be a daunting prospect for some but the test boat had the optional bow and stern thrusters and they provided all the maneuvering power needed. The 47‘ handles well at low harbour speeds and there is minimum wash.

On the open sea I saw, that Nordhavn even without using the thrusters can turn around its axis tightly. For navigating inland waterways the mast can be lowered to reduce the air draft considerably. That day the weather was calm and we could not test the yacht in extreme weather conditions. The morning mist was high and the water was as a mirror without any signs of waves. I was really curious how the 47‘ stabilisers work.

We tried to swing the boat with its wash. It did not work well but at least I could sense the difference after I turned the device on. I could see how the stabilisers work on the monitor on the left side of the control panel. These stabilisers kept the rolling down to a minimum but of course they do not control the pitching, so it’s your or autopilot job to avoid next wave rising. I’m sure the 47‘ will handle difficult sea conditions well and for a long passage with a beam sea the stabilisers must be an absolute boon and in most conditions they do make life on board more comfortable. Despite of the traditional drive, the yacht does not need to be driven with the wheel and in longer trip the autopilot is an invaluable help. The time passed quickly and we had to leave our warm and cosy pilothouse and return to a crowded London.

This an abbreviated version of this review. The full review including conclusion can be found in March / April edition of WhatBoat? Magazine.
