Jeanneau 50 DS Review

Jeanneau 50DS
Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 50 Deck Saloon under review
The Sun Odyssey 50DS Deck Saloon might be more Port Grimaud than Port Hyeres.

The facts of the matter are however that Jeanneau has over 86 Million pounds worth of reasons why the smaller brother of the 54DS is still a winner.

The south of France with its sprawling conurbation of towns synonymous with sunshine and sea breezes from Nice, Antibes, Juan le Pin, Monaco, Cannes and further east until St Tropez.

The list of exotic sounding French resorts seems to continue for as long as the Mediterranean terracotta properties cling onto the precipitous rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. As we continue further east in the direction of Marseilles the town names become less familiar. The sumptuous properties overlooking the sea are no more and the rocky terrain trying to shake off the desperately clinging properties has retreated back away from the shore line replaced with more conventional homes and hotels. It’s here we find the man made harbour of Port Grimaud, a mere 5 kms or so before St Tropez, with its endless strips of properties each with their own mooring. With it’s countless homes each with its own mooring Port Grimaud is the cruisers paradise.

Erik Stromberg, Product Manager
Erik Stromberg, shows us around the 50 DS.

Moving further along the coast we arrive into Port d’Hyeres where we will find the Sun Odyssey 50 DS. In comparison, Port Hyeres is much more of a sailing sport centre in comparison to Port Grimaud which is more of a cruisers paradise.

The Jeanneau 54DS was the first from Jeanneau to feature those engaging tear drop windows and since its launch in 2003 some 280 boats plus have been sold. At retail price of £310,000 incl VAT that’s about £86 Million pounds in the bank due to the 54DS alone. Kerrching!! Credit Crunch? Yeah right. Not bad work and the accolades keep coming when in March 2008 the Boat Show in Oslo Norway voted the Sun Odyssey 45 DS as the “Best Sailboat of the Show” at the Oslo.

Jeanneau have been quick to realise the potential and since have launched a whole range of DS models, from the 39DS, the 42DS the 45 DS and the 50DS. If something works stay with it and don’t touch. In fact it’s worked so well this year they decided to tweak the range by adding a performance variant each of the DS models. It makes sense as the 50DS already shares the exactly same hull as the 49 Performance. So the DS “Performance” Variants have slightly taller masts and some exciting tri-radial cut Mylar sails.

So why all the excitement? After chatting to Erik I was surprised to learn that our test 50DS model was in fact hull number 1. I was concerned that unleashing a load of journalists onto hull model number one might be a tad optimistic. I imagined bits coming off and lots of duct tape. However looking around it had not of those tell tale signs of “first modelisms”, nothing was missing, everything fitted extremely well. It was then that Erik points out that in actual fact the hull for the 50 DS is exactly the same as the 49 performance The penny drops. We sit and chat about things since we last met.
The Sun Odyssey 50DS is an impressive sight as we slip out of the harbour and if it’s a head turner you want then the DS range has in in spades. As usual with Erik his knowledge of details is bordering on the slightly obsessive. He eagerly wants to tell me that certain coach roof lines are typically Jeanneau and how some subtle changes to the coach roof mould allowed Jeanneau to gain inches in headroom as you enter the rear cabins.
