Modern hull can use Optimist fittings
Modern hull can use Optimist fittings
The French company behind the biro, Bic, enters into the beginners dinghy market.  The standard here for many years has been the Optimist. Now however that ungainly bath tub shape has been on fighing off competition from the Laser Pico and Topper Taz over the past years. Then in the space of 2 months we get 2 new contenders.  RS with it's Tera launched in May 2006 year and now Bic have launched it's Open Bic dinghy.

The very modern shaped hull coupled with it's ability to be able to use an Optimist's rig, daggerboard and rudder will make it an inviting prospect for those wanting to move up from an old Optimist onto something more modern.

It's true to say that the Optimist still has a place but with modern technology things can have made a big improvement.  One of the biggest changes has been made in the material and construction of the hull.  Now we can extrude a stiff plastic shape cheaply that requires no maintenance and that withstand the knocks of everday use.  Secondly, fixtures and fittings of sails, mast and ancillary equipement are cheaper and lighter and stronger than just 5 years ago.

The details are very similar to other contenders, length 2.75m, width 1.14m, a sail area of 4.5m squared, with max passenger weight of 65kgs.  In the UK it will retail for £1899, which is a few hundred pounds more that the basic RS Tera model.

The hull shape looks very modern that presents a large surface area when heeled over.  We have not yet had the chance to test, but my guess is that once it does heels over and sit on this area, it will be quite solid ad stable at this angle. Are the French taking the bic?

This looks like a great product, well concieved with the ability to upgrade, but we think will find it hard to make a huge impact in the UK, but will certainly make an impact in France.  Other contenders for this space are the Topper Taz, Laser Pico which will not probably be too concerned as yet from this French invader.
