A new challenger for the Optimist, the RS Tera
A new challenger for the Optimist, the RS Tera
Straight after the launch of their RS500 at the London Boat show in January 2006, RS have been busy and have another new boat in their range called the RS Tera.  The model is aimed at the younger end of the sailing spectrum, possibly head to head at the Laser Pico / Optimist which are equally popular models for there simplicity and indestructibility as the "de facto" starter boats.  The Tera has no rigging and can even be used as an oversized kayak, should you feel it necessary, plus setting up the main sail is simple with the well proven "sock" design by simply sliding it over the mast and from what I can tell, reefing will be a case of wrapping the main sail around the mast a few turns.

It will be an ideal boat to introduce the kids to sailing and should keep them hooked – modern looking, fun to sail and exceptional value as the RS Tera Sport £995 with Dacron sail will retail for a short time at £995. The Tera will become part of the RS range and also to report that over 200 boats have already been sold prior to official launch.

The boat is equiped with a simple to use daggerboard for the keel and just a main sail with no rigging for the kids to get tangled up in.

These type of fun kids starter boats should be more popular on our tourist beaches, from Woolacombe to Weymouth.  On our popular tourists beaches there are never any sail boats to be seen or hired, this is one aspect that could be changed to make it easier to recruit newcomers to the sport.  Our beaches are increasingly popular to the modern muesli eating, wet suit wearing modern family, but there is nowhere to hire a small dinghy like the Tera.  North Devon beaches are very popular but could be a great place to get a new audience in boating.

Great fun guaranteed
Great fun guaranteed
However it's definitely a great starter for the kids and family to use at little expense and little to no running costs.  Buy one of these and burn the PlayStation, as Trainspotting so accurately put it.

"Choose life. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit-crushing game shows, stuffing junk food into your mouth.  Choose your future. Choose life..."

Ditch the mind numbing game shows, give the kids a real experience and get involved.
