Ben showing 'em how its done
Ben showing 'em how its done
With the London Olympics safely in the bag for 2012, all we need to run a successful sailing competition is just to add water and wind.  Well Weymouth can do that with no problems, let's face it the harbour is there, complete with water, but perhaps preparing the infrastructure is going to be another matter.  Access to the action at Weymouth from either Dorchester or by Preston Beach Road or for that matter from Bridport is restrictive to say the least.  What is unclear at this moment is exactly what is the intentions of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council are to ease traffic access to the site.   There are talks of a bypass, and then there are more talks.  The question remains, how many spectators are expected?  If it's just a few in their anoraks then a bypass is not required, however if the plan is to attract every woman, man and dog that wants to escape London to see some Olympic Sailing action, surely the current facilties will not sufice.

As if all that was not enough, never to miss an opportunity for a quick profit, property developers Howard Holdings are considering to rebuild the towns Pavillion Theatre and surrounding harbour entrance area to make way for a new huge marina.

Not only is the planned bypass still in a state of extreme dithering, but also the main Weymouth Harbour entrance development, which will not effect the competition directly, is also in a state of unknown.

What we can be sure of is that the Olympics 2012 Sailing Competition in Weymouth and Portland harbour will be success, but how many spectators will be able to share in the spectacle is still unclear and not simply hear the commentary from the car radio stuck in a traffic jam.
