Lombard has announced it is sponsoring Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in the JP Morgan Round the Island Race next week. Sir Robin will be racing his Open 60, appropriately named ‘Lombard Marine Finance’, in the largest yacht race in the world, taking place on 23rd of June. Initially making his mark for his single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the world in 1969, Sir Robin has subsequently continued to sail himself into the record books, most recently securing a triumphant fourth place in the VELUX 5 OCEANS single handed round the world race. Commenting on the partnership with Lombard, Sir Robin commented “I am particularly pleased to be working with Lombard, as they assist so many people in participation in this great sport of sailing. It is good to note that Lombard’s dedicated Marine Finance team includes a high proportion of people who are actively involved in yachting. I look forward to my nephew Paul joining me as crew in the race, who is also one of Lombard’s Marine Managers.” Ian Braham, Head of Marine Finance at Lombard, comments “We’re really looking forward to the race and particularly working in partnership with one of the world’s sailing legends. There’s always a great atmosphere at this event and sailing in the same race as someone as accomplished as Sir Robin really adds to the experience.” Ian is another Round the Island Race veteran having competed 12 times and looks forward to improving on his third in class last year. The Round the Island Race attracts a mixture of sailors with all levels of capability from world class sailors like Sir Robin through to complete novices in yachts of every size and class. Around 1,750 boats take part giving both participants and spectators at the shore a great display. Amlin are also supporting Sir Robin. They own Haven Knox Johnston, the yacht insurer, who insured Robin’s boat in the VELUX 5 OCEANS race and have continued to do so for this event. |
