![]() New Monte Carlo 37 with stepped hull With Italian design from Pierangelo Adreani, Bénéteau's latest power boat, the new Monte Carlo 37 certainly looks impressive. Bénéteau aer hoping that the stepped hull, that they are calling Air Stepped, will not only look good but will help to deliver the required performance package as well. First details to come out from Bénéteau are that the boat will have a choice of power from 2x225HP to 2x260HP which should be enough to give the 6400kg, 11.3m stepped hulled boat decent enough performance. The concept of putting a step in the hull has been around for awhile. The idea is that the step creates a cushion of air beneath the hull to reduce surface tension With power boats, the most significant part of performance coms from hull design. The more wetted surface in the water, the more surface tension, the less efficient the hull will be. Putting steps into the hull, generates a cushion of bubbles that the boats sits on, greatly reducing surface tension, therfore increasing performance for the same amount of power Manufacturers have typically branded their own stepped hull design to differentiate themselves, but in essence the idea and concept remains the same Regal power boats have called their stepped hull FasTrac, Bénéteau are calling theirs Air Step. |
