Applications for booking visitor berthing in Weymouth Harbour and anchorage in Weymouth Bay during the sailing events of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are now open.

To avoid disappointment please book early.

Over the last 18 months the Weymouth Harbour team has been working hard to ensure that boat owners who come to Weymouth & Portland in summer 2012 enjoy the unique experience of visiting the waters around the Olympic sailing events.

Scottish sailor, Luke Patience has sailed his way to a silver medal at the Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships. Along with Stuart Bithell, Luke Patience led the medal race from start to finish in the men’s 470 class out in Australia to secure their second place overall in style at the championships. Jamie Calder from Balerno named Scottish Young Sailor of the Year 2011

Local sailor Jamie Calder from Balerno will pick up one of youth sailings most prestigious awards in the New Year, the RYA Scottish Young Sailor of the Year Award 2011, in recognition of the fantastic results he has achieved in the sport throughout the year.

Earlier in spring this year I had a chance to test the new joystick controlled mooring system fitted to a new Sense 50 sail boat from Beneteau . The system modifies the standard Yanmar saildrive unit so that the propellor can rotate through 360° in less than 1 second. By engaging the joystick control at the cockpit the wheel becomes locked and the only control left is the small joystick that powers the bow thruster as well as the modified sail drive unit.

Artemis Offshore Academy sailor Sam Goodchild will be taking on the Southern Ocean in the double-handed Global Ocean Race with Conrad Colman onboard the 40-ft monohull, Cessna Citation.
